What is a website?

I get asked this question all the time.

Imagine a file cabinet that you have at home or in your office. Inside that file cabinet there are file folders and in each folder there are individual pages.

Now imagine that same file cabinet as your website hosting and each one of the folders is a website and each website contains the pages for that particular site….simple (kind of).

All websites are hosted somewhere. One of the largest website hosts is GoDaddy.com. When you sign up for hosting you are paying for some space on a computer (server) that you can put your website. This server is connected directly to the internet with a much faster internet connection that we have at home. Each server usually will contain multiple websites, this is called shared hosting…each in their own folder on the server. You can get you very own server just for your website but this is not required for most sites and will cost you quite a bit more than shared hosting.

When you sign up for hosting you will be assigned an IP address for you website. This is like your street address on the internet.

Now imagine a “master map” of the internet that knows where all the websites live. This is called DNS or Domain Name Service. We will discuss this later but DNS is how your website gets found when someone in Ohio types in www.yourwebsite.com it goes to your site.

It is very important that your IP does not change or your visitors will be looking in the wrong place for you site but you should not have to worry about that, your host will make sure that it remains the same.

That’s it really. Next time you visit your favorite website just remember that all of the pages are in a folder on a computer somewhere and when you typed in the website address DNS helped you get there.

Is your contact information in the right place?

You have spent a lot of time and money  building your website and promoting it until the wee hours of the night. You finally get some traffic to your site and they want to contact you about your products or service but they can’t find your contact information…..B.A.D!

Does your website have an easy way for your customers to contact you? Is it in the right place on the website? Where is the right place? Who knows…but most people look in the top right corner first or at the bottom of navigation that is on the left side of the page. Lastly they might go to the footer (bottom of page) and look…but probably not.

Put you contact information in plain sight. If you offer phone support put the number with area code. 1-800 numbers used to be popular but most people have free long distance on their cell phone so don’t spend the money for a 800 number unless it becomes a problem. If you have a brick-n-mortar office put the address if you work from home you can get a PO box and call it a suite ex..123 Main Street suite #305.

This is also a good place to have links to your FAQ, privacy policy, and any warranty information if you offer one.

Remember, you work hard for every visitor. Don’t loose them over something easy to fix like this.

Thinking About a Website?

Here are some tips for those of you thinking about starting your first website.

Websites 1011. Decide what you want your website to accomplish.
Will you sell a product on your site or just provide information on your product in order to make the phone ring?

Do you like to write or have something to say? Maybe you need a blog.

2. Establish a budget for your new website.
Websites do not have to be expensive. Features that will increase the price are usually e commerce (shopping cart), Flash animation, custom programming, back end or admin section, excessive pages, etc…

Something to consider when starting is how the website will be maintained after it is up and running. Some people have the tech skills to update their own site and other don’t want to mess with it and have a website developer maintain their site.

You can build your site with a CMS (Content Management System) built in. This means that you can login to the admin section, go to the page you want to edit, and make the changes in a very friendly environment like Microsoft Word. You can also add new pages, links, etc…

This could add more to the cost of development but it will save you money later on with site maintenance.

3. Find a domain name.
A domain name is where your site will live on the internet like example.com. Domains cost about $15  per year or you can save some money if you register them for multiple years at a time.

You can start your search for your domain here – https://www.godaddy.com/domains/search.aspx or we can do this for you at Happyshack Media.

4. Find a website developer.
Unlike brick and mortar business you do not have to deal with a local website developer to build your new website. Everything can be done with a few phone calls and email. Try to find a developer that will answer the phone, has a nice looking portfolio of past projects, speaks good english (or your language), uses a contract, and has a guarantee on their work.

Payments structure is normally 50% upfront and the balance when the site is complete and live on the internet.

5. Start gathering your product images and content
If you are starting a new business you will probably need a logo. Your website developer can probably take care of this for you or will recommend some that can.

Write your content for each page that will be on your new site and keep it in copy-n-paste format. You can email this to the developer when the time comes.
